Questions

It’s normal to have questions before starting any kind of therapy. This page covers some of the most common ones, such as how hypnotherapy works, what a session feels like, and how it can help with your goals.

If you’re considering hypnotherapy for the first time, this page is designed to help you make an informed decision about whether it might be right for you. A free consultation will also give you the opportunity to ask anything specific about your situation, but if you have questions in the meantime, you’re very welcome to get in touch by clicking here.

Hypnosis is a natural and deeply relaxing state of mind – something you’ve likely experienced many times without even realising it. Think of those moments just before falling asleep, when you’re still faintly aware of sounds around you, but they no longer bother you. Or when you’re at work and your mind drifts into a daydream about being on holiday. These are everyday examples of a trance-like state.

In a session with me, during this focused and relaxed state, the mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions and new ways of thinking. I use this natural process to support positive change in how you think, feel, and behave. Hypnotherapy is commonly used to help with issues such as anxiety, fears and phobias, stress, confidence, habits such as smoking, weight-related behaviours, and performance concerns like public speaking.

You may already know what you want to change in your life – whether that’s reducing anxiety, quitting smoking, or building confidence – but your subconscious mind can still hold on to old habits and patterns.

In a calm, focused state of hypnosis, the mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions and new ways of thinking. In my work as a professional hypnotherapist, I use suggestion therapy alongside visualisation techniques to support changes in unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours.

Hypnotherapy works by helping you engage with the part of the mind that influences automatic responses, making it easier to create lasting change.

During a hypnotherapy session, people often feel deeply relaxed, sometimes with a sense of heaviness, lightness, or stillness. Some describe a floating sensation or mild tingling, while others simply feel calm and focused. Many notice that time seems to pass quickly.

You remain fully aware and in control throughout, and most people remember what is said, but feel less distracted by outside thoughts.

After a session, clients often feel calm, refreshed, and relaxed, and are able to continue with their day, including driving safely.

Your mind can be understood in two parts: the conscious and the subconscious.

The subconscious mind runs automatic processes such as breathing, emotions, habits, and learned behaviours. It also stores memories and beliefs that influence how you respond to everyday life. The conscious mind is responsible for logical thinking and decision-making.

In hypnotherapy, the relaxed hypnotic state is used to help access and update unhelpful subconscious patterns so they can be changed. This can support positive change in areas such as anxiety, fears and phobias, confidence, habits, and stress.
