Most films and television programmes portray childbirth to be an extremely painful experience with screaming and swearing. If this was the case wouldn’t women stop at one child (because they couldn’t bear to go through it again) and most people have no siblings? The majority of women would prefer to have as natural a birth as possible because they realise it’s better for them and better for their baby. But a mother who hasn’t prepared well for childbirth may find that soon after it begins panic can set in. They want drug and epidurals to ease the pain, pain that they have already convinced themselves they will have.

Part of the fear of childbirth is often the fear of being out of control. In today’s society women (and men) are in control of nearly all aspects of their life and some find it harder to cope when nature needs to run its course.

But there is an alternative – self-hypnosis. Practised daily it stops the “fear-tension-pain cycle” kicking in during labour. Mothers can use self-hypnosis to ease discomfort as well as using it to relax their mind and body. A relaxed body means relaxed muscles and uterus – mothers who are uptight and tense are literally holding onto their unborn babies. A relaxed mind can focus more clearly and thereby concentrate on the matter in hand of easing their baby gently into the world. Feelings of discomfort can be converted into feelings of pressure when pushing. Hypnotherapy can help change your perception of the birth and every contraction can be seen as being a step closer to meeting your baby for the first time. Hypno-birthing can be just the answer you are looking for to remain in control of what’s happening during labour.

Fears and PhobiasI have come across an interesting post on the Daily Mail website regarding phobias. It debates the fact that we learn to develop fears and phobias rather than being born with them. Many children for instance will copy their parent’s reactions if let’s say their mother screams hysterically whenever she sees a snake. The child will very quickly come to the conclusion there must be something really scary about snakes otherwise mum wouldn’t scream every time she saw one on the TV! The article goes on to explain that hypnotherapy can be very effective in dealing with phobias such as flying. I’ve helped people with all sorts of phobias including driving phobias, flying, insects, public speaking and exams. If you would like some help with your phobia please visit the relevant page on my website:- www.thehypnopractice.com/fears-phobias

gift-444519_640The link to the article below demonstrates how useful the NLP technique of Anchoring can be. By remembering a good time and vividly recalling the emotions connected to the memory, you can then “anchor” that feeling with a physical act such as touching your thumb and index finger. You think the good thought and do the physical action at the same time. This embeds the feeling with the action. Some people may touch a particular knuckle, or their ear lobe. It doesn’t matter what you choose although it helps to choose something which is subtle otherwise you may get some strange looks!

The more often you practice this technique the stronger the feeling will be when you “fire” your anchor in the time of need (firing is simply repeating the physical touch). Firing your anchor would be done in the specific circumstance that you want to evoke that good feeling, such as a feeling of gratitude when you open a present you really do not want.

I use anchoring with clients for all sorts of reasons; maybe to motivate someone, to make them feel happy or confident. The possibilities are almost endless, as long as the outcome you choose is a positive one I am happy to help.
